Pope Francis said the world needs more women representatives and young people not imprisoned in “youth museums.”
During his encounter with the youth at the University of Sto. Tomas, Pope Francis again went off script to respond to the issues of the youth who spoke before him about poverty and cynicism because of an influx of information from the Internet and social media.
In Spanish, he asked why there were a few women representatives in front of him today, which included a little girl who openly wept in front of him and asked him: “Bakit po pumapayag ang Diyos na mayroong ganitong nangyayari? [Why would God allow these kinds of hardships to fall upon us?]”
“Women have a lot to tell us in today’s society. Sometimes, we’re too machistas (men-centric) and we don’t allow room for the women. But women are capable of seeing things from a different angle. Women are able to pose questions that men are not able to understand,” he said.
He noted it was only 12-year-old Glyzelle Iris Palomar who was able to ask the hardest question. “She was able to express herself, but in tears…”
“She is the only one who has put forward a question for which there is no answer and she was not even able to express it in words but rather in tears," he said.
He urged the organizers, “when the next pope comes, please more girls and women among the number.”
